Chinese investor builds in Älvkarleby

Chinese entrepreneur Jingchun Li is to build a new center for business people and tourists next to the E4 motorway at Älvkarleby about 165 kilometers north of Stockholm.

The €10.8 million center, to be known as Dragon Gate, is being built on the site of a former roadside restaurant.

Dragon Gate is being designed as a forum for European business people prior to visiting China as well as an entry point for Chinese businesses seeking to establish operations in Europe.

The center, which will also serve as a cultural and tourist attraction, is being built in Chinese architectural style, with a wall, gate, pagoda and giant Buddhist statue.

Li, whose business interests include ownership of one of the world’s largest mosquito repellent manufacturers, has been based in Sweden since 1999

Aug 21 2006 Chinese venture to create 800 jobs Kalmar in south-east Sweden has been chosen by China’s Fanerdun Group to host a new center for Chinese wholesale companies to introduce their products onto the European market. The venture involves construction of a demonstration facility for 1,000 Chinese businesses to present products to European companies. The center, which will be Fan er du n’s European headquarters, will lead to the creation of an estimated 800 new jobs in Kalmar. Included in the complex will be a hotel, restaurant and a spa offering Chinese medicine. Explaining the choice of Kalmar, Jin Xing Luo, Fanerdun Group owner, said: “The conditions in Kalmar are excellent, especially on the investment side.” The investment was facilitated by Invest in Sweden Agency in cooperation with its regional partner Invest in Kalmar County.

In June a delegation visited Zhejiang Province in China to establish closer links between companies there and companies in the Kalmar region. Participating companies from the county looking for matches with business partners in China were: Aqua Equipment, Nossevo Invest, Innitor, Miljöexpo and Deloitte & Touche. The rest of the delegation included representatives from the Lizi Group (a Chinese company already established in Kalmar), the Regional Council in Kalmar County and the municipality of Hultsfred.

The campaign was instituted in the wake of a series of factory

poisonings earlier this year. In March, six women who worked at a

leather-goods factory in Baigou town, Hebei province, died as a result

of chemical poisoning.

In another similar incident, 13 women working at a Taiwan-funded shoe

factory in Dongguan, Guangdong, were sent to local hospitals in July,

stricken with benzene poisoning. Many came down with anemia and

leukemia as a result.

One of the most widely used industrial chemicals in China is benzene. Chinese medical journals are replete with reports of benzene poisoning.¹ A recent episode occurred in the small town of Baigou in Hebei Province. Benzene containing adhesives were used at a small leather bag shop located inside a private home with little ventilation. Several young female workers, ranging from 16 to 18, worked and slept in the shop. In March 2002 one of the young women, aged 18, was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia and died shortly after. Her death triggered a press investigation, and it was discovered that several other workers from the same shop had previously also died from benzene poisoning.

The news outraged the public and shocked the central government in Beijing, and an official investigation was launched. Official figures indicated that during the past two years a total of 17 workers from the shop had been diagnosed with benzene poisoning and five had already died. Benzene measurements at the shop were as high as 2040 mg/m³.² Another recent episode involved the use of benzene containing paint thinners in Tianjin. Five workers were engaged in waterproofing the basement (32 m x 24 m x 5 m) of a building, which was poorly ventilated with only two openings. On the sixth day, all five workers passed out and two subsequently died. Measurements reported benzene levels of 175.7 and 236.7 mg/m³ at the two openings and 55 463.3 mg/m³ inside the basement.³

Benzene poisoning is probably the most common serious chronic disease found among female migrant workers. Large numbers of benzene poisoning cases have been reported in Beijing, Hebei, Zhejiang, Fujian, and Guanddong, particulary in garment shoes or suitcase factory’s, which often use cheap glue with high compositions of benzene. Female workers are also particulary vunerable to fire accidents, mainly because the often put in congested dormitories without basic safety equipment.

In 1991 72 female workers lost their lives in a fire in Donguan city Guangdong province . A fire in shenzhan in 1993 killed 87 migrants, 85 of whom was women

Conclusion: (my at least)

 

Trading of products and setting up new showrooms from China does not take away the responibility of having the products and productioncentres clean of lethal chemicals…and there Sweden has the knowledge what how and when those stuff could be used..as the people working for salary’s lower then in Sweden.

 

So the joint partnerships are based on trade on a responsibility learning this

towards  the future the children…
